FAQ

What types of advisors do you serve?
We service all financial advisors including investment, insurance, planning and financial advice. The commonality is that advisors must have a loyal clientele (own their books.)
It’s not the size that counts, but rather the level of client loyalty, or book ownership. We work with advisors whose book sizes range from boutique to billions in AUM.
● It was a lot of work in the past, but with e-signature, digitization and dedicated transition teams it’s much smoother than even just five years ago. Advanced technologies and automation, along with streamlined processes, greatly reduce the admin burden of transitioning a book.
● When established advisors move to a superior platform, 9 out of 10 times we see AUM growth by as much as 10-15% within a year, with some advisors consolidating assets in as little as three months.
● Providing greater differentiation and superior resources strengthens the substance of client relationships, increasing loyalty and frequently triggering asset consolidation.
● Our Dealer Shelf consists of select dealers and portfolio management firms that we have vetted and that we believe are set up to thrive, build wealth and be part of the future of the rapidly evolving financial services industry. They are dealers and portfolio management firms that we are proud to represent.
● Our Dealer Shelf is exclusively for dealers and portfolio management firms that:
○ provide a platform for advisors to differentiate themselves;
○ provide access to non-commoditized investments;
○ deliver a superior client experience through advanced technology and unique resources, or;
○ are otherwise positioned to make advisors and their clients wealthy.
Yes, we can help you. We facilitate the deal process, help determine and get agreement on a fair multiple for the book, and provide our deal framework that aligns buyer and seller interests. In every case the objective is to increase the value of the book along with the wealth of the clients, sellers and buyers.
How early is too early to look for succession?
We recommend starting to look 6 to 12 months before you want to commence transitioning out of the business or otherwise slow down. Before then focus your energies on building your book, cleaning it up, ensuring that compliance and documentation are tight and, where possible, digitizing your practice. The higher the quality of your book, the better the offers will be from the highest quality buying advisor. Remember that there will most always be a transition period during which you will work with the buying advisor. Transitions typically range from a few months to a year.
● Put clients’ interests first and both the seller and buyer will do well too.
● Work only with buyers who are established advisors with proven track records of building and running successful practices.
● Structure deals to align buyer and seller interests, putting them on “the same side of the table” with the common objectives of maximizing retention and client satisfaction.
● Close deals that create wealth and optimize outcomes for clients, sellers and buyers, allowing sellers to confidently say “I left my clients in the best hands possible.”
We use our Know Your Buyer framework, evaluating buyers based on:
● Established Record: Track record of acquiring and retaining clients.
● Philosophy: Match vis-a-vis the investment strategy and client servicing standards of the seller.
● Scalability: Management skills and team capacity to smoothly absorb and service a sudden growth in client base.
● Bankability: Sufficient resources to fund a book purchase without creating financial stress for themselves or providing an inferior deal to the seller.
Yes we do and we’ve written it for you.
The Written Plan
● Forecast the timing. You can change it, even more than once. ● Focus your efforts, knowledge and entrepreneurialism on making your book the cleanest, most attractive and valuable asset that you can.
● Direct your sales efforts towards developing a multigenerational practice.
● Choose your succession plan from either The Direct Sale, The Invested Seller, The Builder Handoff or The Associate Handoff based on your needs and team composition at that time.
● Choose the successor most capable of serving your clients into the future and ensuring you a lucrative succession today. Choose the predictable outcome.
● Don’t make it more complicated than this. End of The Written Plan.
●The success rate for new advisors is under 10%. Even fewer will have the capacity to fund an acquisition or manage a big book. Betting that an associate will be fully capable of assuming your book in 5 to 10 years comes with a single digit probability—that’s gambling. Some gamblers get lucky, but that’s not a plan.

● We bring established buyers with track records of success to the table. We don’t gamble. Your succession—and your clients’ succession—is too important.
